Missing Teeth Ruining Your Holidays?

Hello Eugene! Welcome back to the dental health blog of Eugene Family Dental. We hope you’re enjoying the sight of the leaves changing colors as the holidays rapidly approach. Do you have a lot on your plate for Thanksgiving and the other winter holidays? There’s cooking to be done, shopping lists to be written, and letters to be delivered to Santa.

Amid all the stress and the excitement of the holidays, it’s easy to lose sight of some things. Like your oral health. You might not be thinking about the dentist’s office this time of year, but all it takes is a toothache to ruin your Thanksgiving. In our next few blog posts, we want to share some details about how some of our treatments can improve your Thanksgiving holiday.

If you’re worried about smiling for holiday photos due to the condition of your teeth, we can help you whiten them with a session of professional teeth whitening. If you have a toothache, you many need some restorative dental work to help get you in the mood for chewing turkey. If you’re stressed about the holidays, or have anxiety about visiting the dentist in general, we can set you up with worry-free, stress-free sedation dentistry.

But in today’s post, we want to talk about the 800 pound gorilla in the room: missing teeth. If you or a loved one is missing teeth, it can make it difficult to smile due to your appearance. The shame and embarrassment can be a tremendous negative force to your self-confidence and self-esteem. But sadly, the problems caused by missing teeth don’t begin and end with cosmetic troubles.

When you have missing teeth, your jawbone actually begins to shrink. This frightening bone-loss can cause your other teeth to loosen, and spread apart. The simple act of chewing begins potentially dangerous, as you risk losing another tooth with just one misplaced or mistimed bite. At Eugene Family Dental in Eugene, OR, we can care about your oral health. Plus, we realize that’s really no way to live. So we’re proud to offer dental implants to replace missing teeth.

A dental implant is a replacement tooth root; a dental implant actually replaces the roots the teeth you are missing. This serves to improve your jawbone’s health, and prevent you from losing bone density. Without a dental implant, bone lass can cause you to develop a sort of shrunken look in your checks. You may recognize this appearance if you look at a long-term denture wearer without their dentures in place.

A dental implant is essentially a titanium screw; it is threaded so that it naturally integrates into your jawbone. Most dental implants are the size of your natural tooth roots and extend for the bottom of your jawbone, up threw your gum line. On top of the screw, we can place a variety of restorations such as an artificial tooth or dental bridge. Dental implant restorations function as well your natural teeth, allowing you to chew all of your favorite foods.

If you’re interested in dental implants, we will refer you to an oral surgeon who can place the titanium screw into your jawbone. Once the screw has integrated into your jawbone, we will provide you with the permanent restoration which tops the screw. For a single missing tooth, we will place a crown on the implant. Our crowns are durable and look just like your natural teeth; in fact we’re confident that only you and your dentist will know that it’s not your natural tooth! We offer crowns made out of zirconium and e.max porcelain.

If you’re missing several teeth, we can place a dental bridge on the dental implant. A series of dental bridges can be installed if you are missing many of your teeth. We can also modify dentures to be compatible with dental implants. Using a bar and clasp system or a ball and socket system, we can create supports for your dentures. Then you don’t have to worry about using adhesives, or risking your dentures falling out at inopportune times such as during a meal or while speaking.
