Thanksgiving is one of the tasty times of the year. But if you have a toothache, you likely won’t be able to enjoy all of your favorite foods this holiday season. Toothaches can because by several things, but the most common cause is generally tooth decay. Tooth decay can be extremely painful; it can completely disrupt not just your holiday plans, but also your ability to eat, and your sleep schedule.

In the last two posts, we’ve been detailing some of the procedures we offer we can help your smile this Thanksgiving. In the last post, we told you about how professional teeth whitening can brighten your smile in time for your family’s holiday photos. We also detailed how detail implants can completely fill gaps in your smile by replacing your missing teeth. Today we want to tell you about restorative dental procedures, specifically how they can relieve toothaches in time for Thanksgiving.

At Eugene Family Dental in Eugene, OR, we offer restorative dental treatments which can help restore your ability to eat in time for the holidays. Tooth decay is a fairly common occurrence in most adults; even if you practice good oral health routines, you may still end up with a cavity or two. Most adults will have at least one or two at some point in their lives. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria; bacteria is drawn to food on your teeth. Essentially every time you take a bite of food, you attract some bacteria to your teeth. This bacteria forms plaque which decays your teeth.

Plaque can eventually cause cavities. Cavities can often by treated with a dental filling; a dental filling is used to fill cavities and restore form and function to a tooth. Dental fillings can restore the structure of of a tooth, preventing further decay and damage. In the past, most fillings were filled with a metal material called anagram. This material contained mercury. But the days of a mouth filled with metal fillings has thankfully passed.

At Eugene Family Dental in Eugene, OR, we use composite resin fillings. Composite resin fillings are manufactured out of a mixture of glass and plastics; the material is soft and moldable when placed in your teeth. We sculpt the resin to fit the structure of your teeth, then harden it into place. Composite resin looks white and gleams like a natural tooth. The material is white and can be matched to the shade of your natural teeth.

However, not all cavities can be repaired by fillings. In those cases we also offer inlays, onlays, and dental crowns. Inlays and onlays serve a similar function to fillings, but are intended to cover a larger portion of your teeth. An inlays are placed on the chewing surface of a tooth, and replace the chewing function of your teeth. An onlay is larger than inlay, and may cover the sides of your teeth and the chewing surface. Inlays and onlays are made from porcelain or composite resin materials.

Dental crowns are used as a complete cover for a damaged tooth when too much of it has been damaged by decay. A crown is essentially a hollow tooth which fits over your natural tooth, after the natural tooth has had the decay removed. Crowns take around two appointments to apply; in the first appointment we prepare the tooth to receive the crown be removing the decay, with also take impressions and measurements to create the crown. The crown is then created out of e.max porcelain or zirconium at a dental lab, when it is finished you return to our office and we place it on your tooth. Our crowns are incredibly lifelike, last decades, and restore your ability to chew.
