Do you know anyone who is afraid of the dentist? Are any of those people in your family? Is that person you?
If it is, we want you to know that you are OK. Dental anxiety is a common condition. According to some experts’ estimates, as many as 1 in 5 people avoid going to the dentist because of their dental fear.
That also means that more than 1 in 5 people experiences some level of dental anxiety. So how do other people manage their fears? One way is to find a dentist office that caters to its patients as individuals.
In Oregon, Eugene Family Dental strives to do that through the various comfort options, including sedation dentistry, that we offer for our patients.
We realize this may not be important to every patient, but many people appreciate the availability of internet access during their visits with us.
One way we know this can help is by allowing you to listen to your favorite music before and during your treatment. This can be a big help for someone who can alleviate their anxiety by occupying their mind with something other than their dental care.
This also is the reason that we have ceiling-mounted televisions in all our patient care rooms. While a hygienist is cleaning your teeth, you can lie back, watch a video, and focus your attention on something else.
Of course, comfort can be a physical issue as well as a mental one. In our waiting area, we provide beverages and comfortable seating. When you are called for your treatment, feel free to request a pillow, blanket, or both so you can feel as cozy as possible.
Our large windows provide great views of the natural environment that surround our office.
You also may want to schedule a longer appointment when you plan your visits. If you have a longer appointment, you can feel comfortable asking to take a break if you ever start to feel overwhelmed. Breaking up your cleaning or other procedure into smaller doses may be the easiest way for you to complete your treatment.
If you have more severe dental anxiety, we realize you may need more than a pillow and a blanket to calm your nerves. Sedation dentistry is an excellent solution for those patients.
Dental sedation can address a number of concerns at the same time. Here are some of the benefits of our sedation options:
• You will not feel any pain.
• You will remain relaxed.
• You will not gag.
• You may not remember anything about your treatment.
Different people experience dental anxiety for different reasons, but we have found that sedation helps to address a wide range of issues that cause feelings of apprehension.
We offer two forms of sedation in our practice — oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide.
Oral conscious sedation is the more powerful option. Patients who receive this will take a pill about an hour before their treatment begins. By the time we start, you will feel as relaxed as you can be. You might fall asleep, too.
Your dentist or hygienist will be able to do what needs to be done to keep your mouth healthy. Meanwhile, you will stay cool throughout your visit.
The effects of this kind of sedation can last for a few hours, so we will require you to bring a family member or friend to take you home. You will probably want to rest for a while after you get home, too.
Nitrous oxide is comparably effective, but it takes effect and wears off more quickly than oral conscious sedation. It’s possible you have heard of nitrous oxide by another name, laughing gas.
For this kind of sedation dentistry, we will use a nosepiece to administer the gas. When we turn it on, you will inhale the nitrous oxide. Within minutes, you will begin to feel more relaxed and calmer.
After you treatment is finished, we will turn the gas off. As you exhale the remaining gas, you will return to feeling like your regular self. With this kind of sedation, you can return to work or get on with your other plans for the day.
